Dyslexia and Related Disorders
Not all students learn to read, write, and spell in the same way. Even with effective classroom instruction, some students may continue to struggle. For some, this difficulty may be due to a reading disability known as dyslexia. These students often benefit from targeted intervention in addition to their regular classroom instruction to support their academic success.
Sanger Independent School District provides dyslexia services on all campuses for students who meet the eligibility criteria. Instruction is delivered by trained educators using evidence-based programs that address key areas such as phonological awareness, sound-symbol association, syllabication, orthography, morphology, syntax, reading comprehension, and fluency.
In addition, students identified with dyslexia receive appropriate instructional accommodations to support their learning throughout their academic journey. Sanger ISD follows the guidelines outlined in The Dyslexia Handbook to ensure quality and consistency in its dyslexia programming.
All evaluations for dyslexia or the related disorder of dysgraphia are conducted through a complete individual evaluation as part of the special education process.
Sanger ISD completes a dyslexia screening with:
-
All kindergarten students at the end of the school year
-
All first-grade students at the end of the first semester
Screening results are shared with parents via a letter sent home. If a student is identified as at risk for dyslexia, parents are contacted to discuss the next steps.
If you are concerned that your child may have characteristics of dyslexia, please contact your child’s teacher or campus administrator. They can guide you through the process for screening, evaluation, and available support services.
