School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

School Health Advisory Council

Texas law (Texas Education Code, Section 28.004) requires every school district to establish a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). A SHAC is made up of representatives from both the community and the school district. Its primary role is to make recommendations to the local school board to ensure that the district’s health programs and health education align with community values.

School Health Advisory Councils play a vital role in connecting health and learning. They also give parents and community members a way to support and strengthen the knowledge and skills students need to live healthy, successful lives. The SHAC also helps to create the coordinated school health program.

What is included in a coordinated school health program (CSHP)? The components of a coordinated school health program include:

  • Family and community involvement
  • Nutrition services
  • Physical education
  • Health education
  • Counseling, psychological and social services
  • Health services
  • Healthy school environment
  • Health promotion for school staff
